Unique Names for Male and Female Dogs

Picking a dog name can be challenging, but all you really need to do is rely on your creativity. Here are some tips and some suggestions for your pup's name.

Pick a name that describes your dog's personality, for example, when I was young my parents brought home a dog and we named him Wags because his tail was wagging so much it kept hitting the sides of his kennel. Or pick a name for your dog that describes something you love, for example, my husband and I currently own a pit bull named Packer. He is named after the Green Bay Packers, of course, because my husband is such a huge fan.

Here are some unique name suggestions; you can also check out the sources I used for more suggestions!

Male

Alpha, cute name for a frat dog.

Dawg, well, I thought it was funny.

Echo, I really like this one!

Midnight, good for a black or dark brown dog.

Little-foot, cute and funny!

Eclipse, not after the car though!

Ace, cute for avid card players.

Blueprint, good for a blue Australian Shepherd

Charmer, cute!

Puddles, should be my dog's name, he loves puddles!

Storm, cute!

Female

Godiva, perfect for a chocolate colored pup!

Aries, or any of the astrological signs!

Sobriety, actually the name of my mom's cat that she found outside of an AA building, but it would be cute for a dog too!

Hugs and Kisses, two names I picked for two previous dogs I owned at the same time.

Heart-breaker, so cute for a small dog, especially a miniature poodle.

Peaches, cute!

Beauty, love it!

Valentine, cute for a little pup.

Wink, if only dogs could wink!

Flirt, adorable!

Female Or Male Which Dog is Better

Many people cant decide which dog makes a better petmale or female. Which one is the best? It depends on what you're looking for, for example, if you care about the personality and character of the dog more than anything else, the gender shouldn't make a huge difference. Your choice will be based solely on how the puppy behaves and acts towards you and other folks when you are looking at the litter.

On another level, if you want to find out whether a male dog or a female dog would generally make an overall better pet, then you'll have to take in other factors, such as the size, temperament, and level of care.

What to Look For When Choosing A Female Dog

Usually, female dogs are relatively smaller in size and warmer in behaviors. There are, however, some male dogs that are just as kind as female dogs. Several dog trainers and breeders recommend a female dog to homes with young children. Some actually believe that there is some type of maternal instinct that exists in female dogs. This is usually described as a quality that makes them amiable and ideal for a household with children.

Never allow feminine problems such as heat cycles and bleeding steer you away from getting a female pet. If you are apprehensive that she will bleed all over your home when that time comes, consider getting her spayed, which is the ideal thing to do anyway. Once shes spayed, rest assured that she will not bleed a single drop. As far as behavior, female dogs can be just as challenging as male dogs, sometimes even more of a challenge.

What to Look For When Choosing A Male Dog

Male pets are a little more difficult to care for at times than females. Reason being, they are quite good at performing a disappearing act when a nearby female dog is in heat. This can be quite hazardous to the dog as well as create problems for you. Several male dogs have been hurt or even killed when escaping their homes to search for a female in heat. Between moving cars and fights with other male dogs, it makes perfect sense to also have male dogs fixed.

Most male dogs are also very protective over their property, including any of his stuff inside your home, his bathroom area, or even a female dog. A male dog usually become very hostile when they think that his property is being taken over by another dog and is willing to fight to defend it.

Also, male dogs also show territorial urination by lifting its leg up as high as possible while urinating. This leg-lifting act is not an issue unless it occurs inside the house.

On the other hand, male dogs have huge amounts of energy and are a lot of fun to play with. Male dogs can be more active and have more fortitude than female dogs. This is probably the reason why male dogs are normally chosen for jobs in law enforcement.

Tips to Have Interesting Dog Names

If you have just bought yourself a new dog or pup, the next important stage is to give it a distinctive dog name. You may choose dog names that are popular dog names, female dog names, male dog names or even funny dog names. What is important is that you like it and that it gives your dog his unique identity.Thinking of a one-of-a-kind dog name for your pet can be a difficult task, especially since it will be with your dog for life. The dog name that you choose will say as much about you as it does about your dog. It reflects how you view your dog and your relationship with it. Some dog names sound like male dog names and some sound like female dog names. Some dog names are funny while some are serious. It does not matter what kind of a Dog Name you are looking for but it is very essential to choose a Dog Name wisely. Some names like Killer, Wolf, Tiger, etc. can be frightening to people who are already apprehensive of dogs. Your pet dog will be an important part of your family. Therefore select a name that you won't mind calling out time and again.Another point to consider when choosing a dog Name is whether you would feel comfortable calling out to your dog at the top of your voice in public. Some unique dog names like Stinkball or Dumbbell may sound delightful at first but can leave you feeling embarrassed in the company of a crowd.

When thinking of unique dog names for your pet do consider whether your dog will be able to distinguish his or her name from normal everyday commands. Similarly the dog name that you select should match with some physical trait of your dog. You don't want to give your big strong male dog a cute name like Twinkle Toes or Sugar Plum or a very strong powerful male name like Fang or Goliath to a delicate female dog.At times, waiting a few days before choosing a name can be of help as you may pick up on little characteristics of your new dog that will give you some inspiration. If your new pup loves to steal things and hide them in his bed, how about 'Bandit'?Giving your dog or pup a name can be easy if you keep the following pointers in mind.As far as possible use a dog name with more than one syllable. Dogs find it easier to hear longer names than shorter ones.As mentioned earlier, make sure your dog's name does not sound like another word that your dog might confuse with. Bo is a popular name but it sounds like the command 'No'.Choose a name that suits the sex of your dog. Female dog names for girl dogs and male dog names for male dogs make more sense although neutral popular dog names can also be chosen.Yours dog's physical appearance might help you choose a name.Your dog's personality could help you decide a dog name.Your dog's behavior could also inspire dog names. You could also give your dog the names of any famous personalities like movie stars, rock stars and even politicians for that matter.Another great source of unique dog names is from books and television.Once you have named your dog, be sure that you use it as frequently as possible, so that he learns it quickly. If you want your dog to like his name, never ever use it when you are angry with him or disciplining him. Try as far as possible, not to raise your voice when you use his name. The most popular male dog names are Sam, Sammie, Max, Bear, Buddy and Taffy. The most popular girl dog names are Samantha, Maggie, Molly, Lady, Lucy, and Sadie. Some popular dog names that are used for both male and female dogs are Tasha, Brandy, Ginger and Taffy. You can choose a girl dog name or a female dog name, a neutral dog name or a funny dog name or even a famous dog name - made famous through movies, comic strips or made famous because of their famous owners.

Things To Consider When Choosing Female Dog Names

When it comes to choosing a female dogs name the one you finally settle upon will say as much about you as it does about your pet. In fact of all the female dog names that are used today they will often show how an owner views their pet as well as the kind of relationship that they have with that animal. The name you choose for your female dog or puppy can in some cases cause others to react either positively or negatively towards the animal when they first meet her.Certainly when it comes to choosing the name for your dog it is important that you choose one which is going to convey the right kind of positive image to those who are going to be interacting with her.Currently the most popular of all names for female dogs at this time are as follows:-MaggieMollyLadySadieLucyDaisyGingerAbbySashaSandyWhen it comes to choosing your female dogs name it is important that you take into consideration certain factors which will help to ensure that your choice of name is appropriate.

1. It is best if you try to choose a number that is no more than 2 syllables as those with one syllable can often leave your dog feeling confused. Dogs unfortunately will often find it difficult to differentiate one word from another. Whilst those names that have more than 2 syllables will be very difficult for a dog to learn. Often names with are either too long or can be difficult to say may leave your dog feeling confused and certainly with puppies you may find that they lose interest when you are trying to teach them something. It is therefore best that you choose a name which is not only easy to remember but also easy to say.2. Never rush in to giving your dog her new name instead of take a few days before you make anything final. During this time it will also give you a chance to learn just what kind of personality your dog has and through their character traits you may actually find a name which suits her perfectly. However it is also best if you choose a number which as they grow older will grow with them. Certainly calling a puppy Frisky is fine but you may find that as they grow older they become much calmer and more docile.3. It is also important that the female dog names you consider for your pet are ones which you will not be embarrassed to call out in public. Certainly the names that we have listed above are some of the more traditional and would not seem out of place in any park today. However you may find that your dog and others around could become confused if you use a name that is particular common. So try and provide a little uniqueness when it comes to choosing a name for your dog.

Pick a name that fits your dog's personality as well as your own.Your dog is your best friend and you will call your dog an average of 25,000 times during his/her life. Imagine giving your dog the wrong name!Another fact is that many dog owners would like to change the name of their dog after a few months already. Why stress the dog with a new name when you can do it right from the beginning?Below are some suggestions of cool dog names. But before we start here are a few more tips. Don't use dog names that sound similar to very common words and commands like 'go, stay, sit, eat, come, run' etc. The biggest mistake down owners do is giving the dog a cure name that fits well as long the dog is young and still a little puppy but sounds stupid for an adult dog.Another not so great idea is to name the dog after people you know. The sport itself- Hard to translate into a cool name. Here are a couple: Rugby PoloIf you like mythology:Hercules - for the tough dog Persephone - great for a mama dog Athena - for the tough female dog Zeus - the "king" Apollo - especially good for blond haired dogs Helena - Beautiful female Pandora - Curious female, maybe she is always getting herself into "situations" Achilles - warrior dog Odysseus - the "traveling dog" Diana (Roman) Selene (Greek)- She may love to howl at the moon Thor- For the "protector" Aphrodite- loving female Shiva- The multi-faceted female Kali- Destructive female Artemis- Female dog. Choosing A Unique Dog Name

If you are thinking of getting a new puppy or if you have just bought a dog, it's probably getting to the stage where you are trying to think of a unique name for your new pet. Thinking of a unique name for your dog can be quite difficult, especially when you are not feeling very creative. When you choose a name, it's important to choose a good one as that name will be with your dog for life. You don't want to give a big strong male dog a cutsie name or similarly a male name to a delicate female dog. To help you get those creative juices flowing and think of a name for your dog, we have a few pointers that may help. The main thing to consider when tyrying to choose a unique name for your dog, is whether your dog will be able to distinguish his or her name from your normal everyday commands. If you think about it for a moment, calling your dog 'Joe' or 'Boe' may very well confuse your pet when your actually trying to say 'NO'. Other similar sounds are 'Sit', 'Stay', 'Fetch', 'Down' etc.Try and choose a unique name that is easy for your dog to pick up on. Usually one or two syllabul words are easier to distinguish from background noise especially when your dog gets hard of hearing. Another point to consider when choosing a name, is whether you would feel comfortable calling your dog at the top of your voice in the middle of a crowded park. Novelty names may sound appealing at first but can leave you feeling embarrassed or even worse, unwilling to call your dog when out in public.

Sometimes, waiting a few days after getting your new dog before choosing your unique name can make the process much easier. The reason for this, is that you may pick up on little characteristics of your new dog that will give you some inspiration. If your new puppy loves to steal things and hide them in their bed, how about 'Sinbad'? Maybe your new dog is a brave little soul and has the strength and character of a lion, maybe 'Leo' would suit your new dog.Another great source of unique dog names, is from books and television. Do you have a favourite cartoon character or a favourite childhood hero? There are literally hundreds of possibilities.Choosing a unique dog name can be a lot of fun and will endow your dog with a new identity within your family. Take a little time and do a bit of research and you will soon find the perfect name for your new pet.

Choosing A Great Dog Name

For some people, choosing a name for their dog is almost as important as choosing a name for their child. While you can technically change the name of the dog whenever you want, we all know that we are very reluctant to once the name sticks. So it is always best to choose a great name for your dog from the start. There are many routes one can go with choosing a dog name. Some name their dog using traditional people names, such as Suzie, Charlie, etc. This may cause some confusion though when talking to acquaintances. For example, if you, a close friend, and an acquaintance are talking and you mention your dog by its name (say Alexander), the acquaintance may think you are talking about a person. This is one of many reasons why most people do not choose a people name for their dog.Another option people use is traditional dog names, such as Rover, Fido, Fluffy, etc. These names are viewed as so overused that people now hardly use them at all! If anything, using a name like this is almost a joke. While there is nothing wrong with using these names, people generally want to give their dog a more special, unique name. One way to find unique names is searching the Internet. There are many good websites out there that have names for dogs. Most websites also differentiate if the name is commonly used for boy dogs or girl dogs. A lot of these websites have so many names that choosing one may be a bit intimidating! So if you use the Internet, schedule yourself an hour's worth of time, so you will be able to not feel rushed as you go about looking for a name for your new pet.

Besides searching the Internet, another way to name your dog is to think of a name that characterizes your dog. The name may relate to the dog's physical characteristics. For example, if he has a long nose, you may call him Pinocchio. If the dog has a lot of spots, you may choose to name him Spotty.Another way to name your dog is based on his or her emotional characteristics. Is he or she especially energetic, sleepy, or perhaps playful? These are all methods you could use to figure out a name for your dog.Often, people choose a funny name for their dog. For example, if their dog start sneezing a lot at first, they might choose to call him Mr. Sniffles. While this may seem humorous at first, keep in mind that you will likely be using this name for fifteen years or so. The novelty of a humorous name often wears out fast.Likewise, just as you should think twice about a humorous name, also think twice about a long name. You'll likely have to be calling your dog by this name a lot, and it's going to be annoying after awhile to have to use a six or seven syllable name. Most people like to just use names with one or two syllables.

A Suggestion on How to Choose a Name For Your Dog!

Choosing the ideal name for your new puppy or dog can be a difficult task. It was for me anyway, it took a while to decide on the name of my first puppy, JAWS. Choosing dog names can be a real challenge, especially if you buy a dog not only for your family and own pleasure, but also for various dog shows.Choose a name that best describes your relationship. Choosing Female Dog Names

Although there are no specific rules for choosing a name for your dog, it only stands to reason that female dogs should have female dog names. The names for female dogs also tend be sound more feminine and have more sounds of the letter "U" in them. Many people do not realize that by giving your dog a calm and soothing name, it can help to calm its personality. You should take the dog's size and personality into consideration before you do choose a name. This means you should have the dog in your hoe for a few days to see how it acts before you make the final naming decision. You should put a lot of though into the name you choose for your dog. This is because you will be using it al lot - every time you call the dog and in the early days, this will likely be many times. Therefore it should be a name that you like and one that is easy to say. Since the dog will be considered a member of the family, everyone should have say in making the choice of name. If you have small children that do not talk plainly yet, it is important to choose a short name with few syllables so that these children will learn to say the name properly and easily. Choosing a name for the dog can be difficult because you want to give the dog a name that expresses her personality and demonstrates that she is a lady. The name you choose says a lot about you as a person and about your creativity.
You don't want anyone to make fun of the name because this means they are making fun of you and of your dog. The name gives others a view of how you view the dog. A name such as "Runt" for example, may give others the impression that you don't love your dog. Search through a list of names for female dogs and make a list of the ones that you like. Then consult with the members of the family to eliminate names that most of them do not like. When you have a few choices remaining, try out the names on the dog. Believe it or not, the dog will react to names and may very well choose her own name in this manner. One important fact about choosing dog manes is that they should never sound similar to a command. This is true of most one-syllable commands, which means you can eliminate any of those names from your list. While you might want to choose a name that suits the cute cuddly puppy, you have to think about the greed of the dog and realize that she will grow into an adult. Think about how the cute name will sound on a large dog. Another name you should avoid is one that is similar to that of another family member. This will confuse the dog and she won't know if you're calling to her or the other person. By Ling L. Tong
